HOW MUCH DAMAGE CAN CARPENTER BEES CAUSE?

As a University of Georgia Cooperative Extension agent, I see a lot of insects. People leave jars of them on my desk, send me photos or call me out to their gardens to identify them and give control recommendations. Late summer is a good time to observe many types of insects buzzing around homes and gardens. As we approach fall, the local populations of many types of insects begin to reach their peak. Carpenter bee traps are available at most lawn and garden centers, but results vary regarding their effectiveness. Treat wood with thick coats of oil-based or latex paint or stain.

They live in small colonies, usually consisting of a few hundred to a thousand bees. Carpenter bees are small and harmless, but they can sting if they feel threatened. Some people believe they are essential for pollination, while others claim they are pests. After you’re done doing this, it’s a good idea to cover the holes with mesh or caulk so they don’t come back. However, you would be killing any eggs the bee has laid in the hole , and the bee may struggle to find another place to nest and die anyway.

Honey

They will often use the sawdust from burrowing to create partitions in their nests. By mixing the sawdust with nectar and compressing it to make particle-board-like walls. In the wild, they can typically be found in rotten wood near fields or anywhere else you may find trees and flowering plants. These bees are most active during the brightest hours of the day, from late morning until early evening. They typically do not nest much higher than 20 ft above the ground, as their young need easy access to flowers and vegetables that grow on the ground.

A deep hive can weigh about 80 pounds, which could wear down the inside of your wall or damage your insulation. Carpenter bees are easy to control by spraying insecticides on the affected area. If there are only one or two galleries that are opened, then an aerosol bee and wasp spray is enough. If a large area is affected, you might want to apply a more persistent insecticide like cyfluthrin. Additionally, if you have a lot of bees living nearby, they will create a buildup of fecal matter that will stain gutters, window sills, and any wood near your home. It can eventually become unsanitary, becoming hazardous for pets and attracting flies.

What month do carpenter bees go away?

Wax and honey stains attract other insects, which could lead to additional problems. Bees, flies, moths, and ants, just to name a few, are some of the critters that have a sweet tooth. The term “busy bee” certainly applies to honey bees, who, as a colony, produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year.

Most of the time they’ll just keep moving along and look for a better home. Treat as many of your wooden surfaces as you can with paint and varnish. Honey bees are easy to distinguish from either of the other two kinds because they are much smaller and have more yellow and orange coloration without much black.

Bees Can Damage Your Wallboard and Insulation

You can also try this method on your siding, where you usually see piles of sawdust near areas with wood. This is how people around the community control and get rid of carpenter bees. Female carpenter bees, on the other hand, have stingers and the ability to sting. It is very unlikely that you would be stung by the female carpenter bees unless you are agitating them or their burrows.

A single female carpenter bee can excavate about 1 inch every 6 days and may only need 4-6 inches, so they aren’t going to take down a structure overnight. Because carpenter bees chew through wood, adding a layer of paint over the top can help keep them away. They typically look for bare wood, so as long as you keep your paint up to date, you can lower your chances of dealing with carpenter bees burrowing into your home. Carpenter bees can quickly become a major headache if you don't deal with them immediately. When they bore into wood, they make tunnels and hollow cavities, as well as burrows filled with sawdust.

Dark Wood Floors In Kitchen

Carpenter bees typically build their tunnels in areas that are protected from the elements, but sometimes they build them in exposed areas. The wood that supports your home is one of its most important structural components. Carpenter bees drill into this wood to make their nests, and over time this can weaken the structural integrity of your house or deck. Understanding the difference between the two is essential because carpenter bees can do a lot of damage to your home. You may have noticed large, black bees hovering around your deck or porch during the spring and summer season. You may think that they’re just another type of bumble bee, but these are actually carpenter bees.

Bees can not handle vinegar and it’s a good thing too because it’s very cheap and readily available. Simply combine vinegar and water and spray it directly into the hole housing the bees. The first order of business of how to get rid of carpenter bees is exterminating the bees living in the wood. Many people use pesticide dust for this which can work fine, but I prefer an expanding foam such as Fuse Foam. The male bee has a yellow face with a white dot on their heads while the females have plain black heads.

If you are having trouble keeping bugs away from your home, sometimes your best choice is to call the professionals. Here at proof pest control, we have the tools and skills necessary to protect your home from any pest issue. As mentioned earlier, this can sometimes leave behind sugars that will embed into the unfinished wood, making it more tantalizing for other pests in the future. Use this method with caution, especially when spraying unfinished or unpainted wood.

A perfect circular hole is formed as an entrance to a tunnel that will lead to several branching tunnels constructed by the worker bees. You can also keep your eyes open for small piles of sawdust and pollen around the entrances to the tunnels. Since carpenter bees dig through the wood rather than digesting it, they produce sawdust .

How to get rid of carpenter bees

If you suspect a termite infestation but arent sure, consider arranging for a professional inspection. You will usually find plenty of frass near a hole dug by termites. Carpenter bees are known for their long lifespan and for being vigorous workers. However, how long they stay around after leaving the hive is still unknown.

Carpenter bees are not aggressive, and they will only sting humans if they are handled or squished. In fact, male carpenter bees do not have stingers, so they are virtually unable to harm people . Avoid placing your hand near their nest holes, as that will almost certainly upset the mother bees enough to sting. You may not think that a few carpenter bee holes are a big deal, but over time these can multiply extensively and cause structural damage to the wood in which they occur.

Bees are interesting creatures, but a lot of people tend to forget that there are different types of bees and interchange them with one another, like carpenter bees. Last but certainly not least are wasps, which commonly build their nests on tree branches, in bushes, or on your home’s overhang. Due to their potentially aggressive nature and painful stings, wasps give bees a bad name. You should call a pro as soon as possible after you notice the problem.

Carpenter bees require softer woods to burrow into, so they prefer raw, untreated redwood, cedar, poplar, cypress, and pine. If you have surfaces made of these woods, make sure to paint or pressure-treat them. They start by digging a hole straight into the wood, about 1/2 inch in diameter. This hole usually goes about an inch deep, then makes a right angle and runs in a straight line with the grain of the wood. The noise they make may attract woodpeckers, which can do further damage to wood as they hunt for the larvae.
